The origin of several common QR codes

The origin of several common QR codes
Mar 30, 2024

Data Matrix code is a matrix 2D barcode invented by Dennis Priddy and Robert S. Cymbalski of the International Data Corporation in the U.S.A. The idea behind its development was to store more information on a smaller barcode label. There are two types of Data Matrix barcodes, ECC000-140 and ECC200. ECC000-140 has several different levels of convolutional error correction, while ECC200 calculates the error correction codes by the Reed-Solomon algorithm using generating polynomials, and different sizes of ECC200 symbols are applied with different numbers of error correction codes. Nowadays, Data Matrix codes mainly focus on the research and application of ECC200 codes, and the application of ECC000-140 is rare.

Maxi Code Code. Maxi Code initially also known as UPS Code, is a kind of U.S. UPS Express specifically designed for the mail system of the special two-dimensional bar code, and then by the United States Automatic Identification Association to develop a unified symbology specifications, formally known as Maxi Code, also known as USS-Maxi Code (Uniform Symbology Specification-Maxi Code). Maxi Code is a fixed-size, high-capacity and error-correcting matrix 2D barcode with seven modes (including two invalid modes), which can represent all ASCII characters and extended ASCII characters. The Maxi Code symbol consists of multiple rows of closely spaced hexagonal modules and a centrally located locator graphic (three concentric black circles). Each symbol consists of 884 hexagonal modules arranged in 33 tiers around the central locator graphic, with each tier containing up to 30 modules.

QR Code. QR Code is a matrix two-dimensional bar code developed by Denso Company in Japan, which has the advantages of large amount of information, high reliability, can represent images and a variety of textual information, and strong confidentiality and anti-counterfeiting, etc., and also has a high-speed omnidirectional reading, and can effectively represent the main characteristics of Chinese characters, etc.. Each QR code symbol consists of a nominal square module, forming a square array. It consists of a coding area and functional graphics including a seeker graphic, a separator, a positioning graphic, and a correction graphic. The symbol is surrounded by a blank area.

PDF417 code. PDF417 code is invented by the U.S. Symbol Technologies, Inc. of Chinese-American Dr. Yinjun Wang, PDF (Portable Data File) means "Portable Data File". Because of the composition of the bar code of each bar code character is composed of 4 bars and 4 empty a total of 17 modules, it is called PDF417 code. PDF417 code is a multi-layer, variable length, with high capacity and error correction capabilities of the stacked two-dimensional bar code. Its barcode symbol is a multi-line structure, symbols around the blank area, the upper and lower blank area between the multi-line structure, the same number of characters in each line of the data symbol, line and line left and right aligned direct articulation. The minimum number of rows is 3 and the maximum number of rows is 90. Each PDF417 symbol can represent up to 1108 bytes, or 1850 ASCII characters or 2710 digits of information.

Hanshin code. Hanshin Code is a new type of 2D barcode with completely independent intellectual property rights in China, which was developed by China Article Numbering Center in 2005, and it is the research result of "Research on New 2D Barcode System and Key Technical Standards", an important technical standard research special project in China's "Tenth Five-Year Plan". It is the 2D barcode with the highest coding efficiency for Chinese characters and supports all GB 18030 character sets and future expansion. In addition, it is characterized by large information capacity, high density, anti-distortion and anti-dirt ability, and has reached the international advanced level. Each Chinese character code symbol is composed of a square array of square modules, including an information coding area and a functional graphics area, which includes image-seeking graphics, image-seeking graphics separation area and correction graphics.
